Beyond Awesome: Walking on Water (STEM) Workshop

    DATE:  16th September 2017 (Saturday)

    TIME:  3:30PM to 5:30PM

VENUE:  315 Outram Road, #08-06A Tan Boon Liat Building.

LIMITED PLACES, BOOK YOUR SPOT:  *CLICK HERE*

Starch is a plant saccharide, and an important component of potatoes. Right? You’ll never look at a humble spud the same way again. In this workshop, cornstarch is used to make a fluid that behaves as a solid. You can walk on water, if you just add cornstarch! Other than playing with non-newtonian fluids, students will also get to do some food science. Students will make Japanese mochi, soft filled dumplings made of glutinous rice flour and potato starch that contains starch grains. The mochi have a delicious chewiness because of the structure of the starch grains!

This workshop is best suited for kids 6 and up! Parents are welcome to sit in during the session or drop-off.

This workshop is led by Tan Yi Han who is a Scientist with a passion for research and education. She majored in Molecular and Cell Biology, and graduated from NUS in 2016. Besides wet lab research, she has taught undergraduate students about biology and scientific writing. Yi Han has been a WorldChangeAgent with Blessings in a Bag since 2012 and is interested in science communication.

About Beyond Awesome: While we are aware of the increasing pressure of students to perform well academically in Singapore, we believe it is not everything. Our definition of success is to see each student's emotional intelligence, resilience, confidence and compassion for others be developed throughout our program offerings and to ensure that compassion + empathy are the DNA of every class we run.

There is no such thing as a 'quiet classroom' at our headquarters as we believe learning takes place through communication amongst peers, collaboration and learn-by-doing (and failing)! We run programs such as mindfulness, sport + wellness, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture + Math) and provide once in a lifetime opportunities for our students to personally visit inspiring, innovative, big-name corporates and brands like Twitter.

At Beyond Awesome, students explore the world around them and discover friendships and their potential in life. Our program goals are to nurture and develop each student in our care, so that they leave with the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to be a world-ready individual in today's fast changing era. We combine uniquely big opportunities through offerings such as our 'JalanJalan' experiences with personalised care and individual attention.

Students from high-need communities attend our sessions at no cost, many of whom these opportunities would not be accessible given their families financial background.

    Beyond Awesome Kids Kampung Workshop

    DATE:  12th August 2017 (Saturday)

    TIME:  3:30PM to 5:30PM

VENUE:  315 Outram Road, #08-06A Tan Boon Liat Building.

This workshop is best suited for kids 6 and up! Parents are welcome to sit in during the session or drop-off.

In conjunction with Singapore's 52th birthday, get into the kampung (old-school) spirit by letting the kids get hands-on and creative with their very own card game!

'Piak!' is a unique Singaporean twist on the popular 'Snap' game. (For the non-Singlish speakers, 'Piak' is Singlish for the sound created by a slapping action, which is also the action used by players to snap down on the cards).

In this workshop, kids will get to design their very own identical game cards and then add their own cards to a pile to play with other kids. This promotes group interaction and communication among the kids.

We will also have our own mini Kampung (old-school) snacks kiosk comprising of favourites such as kacang puteh and traditional snacks for refreshments. So make sure to join us for some Kampung (old-school) fun!

This workshop is led by Hui Ling Lim. It's truly amazing to see what students can do when they have an out-of-a-box thinker of a workshop lead like Hui Ling. She is our go-to for anything hands-on and artsy and it's no wonder our team has dubbed her the craft queen! Hui Ling started her own subscription box business catering to kids through literacy and art but now focuses her time between her new venture, Petit Fab, and with our community of youth!

*The cost operates on a play-it-forward model - where your child's fee will cover the cost of another youth to attend either the same workshop or one we hold in future. With limited spaces available, booking is essential. We have an introductory rate available for this session.

In this workshop, students will explore the concepts of viscosity and density using liquids. Students will get to make unicorn and galaxy layered drinks using yoghurt, edible glitter, juices and chocolate as well as green juice. Using liquids of different densities allows for a multi-layered effect to be produced! Galaxy drinks also change colour from blue to purple with a little squeeze of lemon sourness – kids will get to learn about pH and indicators using both pH papers and edible drinks.

Only non-caffeinated ingredients and natural sweeteners such as dates and honey will be used in these drinks, and the drinks are vegetarian suitable. Fresh fruit and veggies will also be on hand so your child can get to try out delicious fruit and veg combinations.

    Beyond Awesome: Mindfulness For Kids

*The cost operates on a play-it-forward model - where your child's fee will cover the cost of another youth to attend either the same workshop or one we hold in future. “There is an emerging body of research that indicates mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to pay attention, to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions. In short, it helps with emotional regulation and cognitive focus.”

This workshop guides kids 6 years and up with practical mindfulness resources that they can utilise straight after the session.

This workshop is led by Dani Van De Velde, a qualified meditation teacher with over twenty years of personal practice and over ten years teaching experience.

Dani helps others understand and master the art of meditation through private coaching and courses and tailored programs for schools and organisations. She is also a popular speaker at networking forums and workshops.

Dani is a member of the Meditation Association of Australia recognizing the standard of her teaching and program development. Dani’s teaching is experiential. She draws from techniques and wisdom of numerous world traditions, current research into neuro and cellular biology, and her own experience to enable her students to experience their innate ability to meditate and the amazing benefits that it offers.

Dani believes that when we have a cognitive understanding of the energetic and physiological processes of meditation, we can more readily move the consciousness into a meditative state and deepen the experience each time.

Prior to teaching meditation and motherhood, Dani enjoyed an extensive career in Strategic Development, Communications and Cultural Change programming and delivery in the financial services and property sectors, based in Australia, London and New York.

Dani currently lives and teaches in Singapore. Since establishing her offering in Singapore in May 2015, Dani has facilitated meditation workshops for over 600 secondary students in international schools, developed workshops and programs for organizations in telecommunications, financial services, tax and financial advisory and manufacturing. Dani also has over 200 private students that she coaches either via private sessions or open courses and drop-ins.

    Beyond Awesome Unbreakable Egg Challenge

It’s time to have an egg-citing time at our Easter-egg themed science session! In this workshop, students will first observe some eggy science – how an egg can get into a bottle and an ‘unbreakable’, transparent egg. Students are then challenged to build a structure to transform their own egg into an unbreakable egg. Lastly, a very special easter egg hunt rounds things off as an exciting finale.
